Islam is the only religion I'm aware of that has banished all idols. And so typically you'll see floral designs or geometrics in the mosaics.

Surprised the Taliban missed destroying those beautiful mosaics in the name of Allah. Though to be fair, one must acknowledge they were rather busy burning the rest of Afghanistan’s cultural history. Most people just know about the Buddha statues, not the paintings, novels, poetry, musical instruments, artists, musicians, writers, they were burned at the stake as well.

Speaking of idolatry, Christians, Jews, Buddhist, Hindus and a host of other faiths don’t worship idols, nor fit into the category.

However, David it right, this belongs in the religious propaganda section.

We are constantly reminded by Islamic propagandist about all of the great advances made by Islam in science, medicine, and art. And I have asked, where are all these marvelous inventions and masterpieces? Then they proudly point at Alhambra. Ok, that is a nice building built 800 years ago, have you done anything since then?

You could raise the same question about Western art. Andy Warhol anyone?

When it comes to great art, Islam is unique in that it is the only religion you don’t think of when it comes to great art.

Interesting. When I think of great religious art, the first thing I always think of is Islamic art. The last thing I think of is Christian art.

As far as Mosques, those are the result of vast collective efforts involving mathematicians and craftsman. There is no one individual.

Fortunately, much of the spectacular architecture still exists, especially in southern spain. And of course there are lots of mosques all over SE Asia, the Middle East, and Africa .
