Franklin was talking about money not Freedom, that being said that is usually the case. But when all you see are the pennies you tend to miss the dimes, quarters and dollars that are being taken.
Bigger picture is good in this case.

Speak actually that came from the OT, Judges, and it was not a reccomendation.
There are those here, and DC is not one of them, that keep insisting that all regulations are bad. So I will ask you this. Do you want to see the end of speed limits on your street, stop signs, trafic lights, and laws in general? The answer is obvious. No you want those regulations. This is part of the problem. What regulations do we need? The idea that men will abuse the power to regulate and not abuse the power to run businesses if there are no regulations is nonsense. Men will abuse power. The trick is to balance power in a way that caused men to behave. Some here think that after the fact remidies are fine. They say that after your child dies of food poisioning that you can get money from the meat packer and that will make it all better. I dissagree with that. I think we should do all that we can to make sure that the meat is safe before the child eats it. Some say that because some problems go unseen that all regulation is bad. That is like saying that because 1% of guns are used in crimes that all guns should be banned. This is the same logic. Furthermore, what we do not know is how many times the inspectors prevent bad meat from getting out. No we need some regulaitons. What we do not need is the level of regulation that we have today. We need to keep the evil tendancies of men from taking over while we, at the same time, allow the most liberty. It is not easy but it is necessary. gary |

Really Gary, what is the new name then?
I have several family members that would sure like to take it again. It's simple guys smaller companies can see no realistic future and the bigger companies have become almost part of the government and seek only to continue their profits, from which they fund the politicians whom make the regulations which keep them in the profits. Our coming economic dislocation MAY just help put an end to this. BUT I fear the crunchy-con ron dreaher's similar conclusion that we may be drifting towards a more totalitarian government. Is it time to cry Alas Babylon?

Sorry previous post was in response to an earlier post.
I think it is safe to say that we can all agree to rules of the road. But do we really need cameras at each intersection? Is there really a benefit to the red light cameras? Besides generating a bunch of money for the city and the "private" company that runs them. Regulations are supposed to promote the general welfare not become a burden whereby companies out of the loop are forced out or just slowly strangled. Why do you think Phillip Morris aka Altria all the sudden decided it supported a ban on advertising? Because it ensures their position and cuts off the others. Just as the telecoms wasted loads of money putting lines in the dirt that now sit unused, government regulations are much more wasteful. I would further add that Paul said all this are lawful for me but not all things are benefical. Yes I am paraphrasing.

Speak, your Paul quote is very close and the sense is absolutely correct. You also understand that we need some regulation. Like you I think that it has gone way to far in some areas and deregulation has gone wrong in others. You are also right that all laws and regulations have to promote the common good.
I think that we need to re-regulate the monopolies and cut regulations in some other areas. I do like the idea that we inspect the food supply and wish that we would do more of that and less of the nonsense that gets done today. The biggest problem is that we regulate a lot of things that do not need it and then ignore the things that need close regulation. Just proves that the government is incompetent at best. gary |
