Tattoos and piercings are among the symptoms of the mainstreaming of prison culture. There are just soooo many who have been in there for drugs and they aren't as stigmatized among their peers for having been there as they once were.

FYI: Tattoos are now the number one cause of the spread of Hepatitis C (followed closely by iv drug use), in this country, anyway. It turns out the little viruses can live for a couple of weeks in the tattoo ink bottle if above 80 degrees F.
