Astrolabe

Sextant

Slide Rule

Abacus

Architectural drawing, engineering drafting ...

All these require the basic ability to read and write in cursive text.

Leonardo's notes ... hold that mirror steady

You sure about that? I aint never seen no abacus that has any writing on it

As for the other instruments, seems to me that any "writing" on them is engraved typeface, not engraved "cursive".

Even if you cant read cursive, do you suppose you'd have any problem finding the corner of 5th and Main?

Learning to read cursive is quite simple.

Learning to write cursive properly isn't. Maybe it's easy if you are one of those artsy-fartsy types who loves watching "Glee". For the rest of us, cursive was a hand-cramp-orama, a pain in the patootie, a total waste of time.

Just let cursive die.

Things that have contributed mightily to the dumbing down of America:

The automatic transmission. Think of it. Learning to coordinate the use of both feet, both hands, and the eye and brain. Only possible with the manual clutch.

Velcro ties for shoes. One of the rites of passage was the learning of how to tie one's shoelaces. Now it is all so easy.

Alphabetical notation. The pictograph demanded far more intelligence. Which is why the Chinese continue to kick our bunwahs!

Guess what. Things change! So deal!

The idea there was to indicate instruments that related to hand written note taking ... which any one of Oriental extraction or an astronomer or old fashioned navigator will tell you is "the way it is done". As for the slide rule, you better write your Q&A down as, if you drop it, the answer is immediately lost.

BTW: Chinese calligraphy is a very stylish cursive written form and is treated as a martial art and is quite a fad now. (See "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" ... Master, I seek a lesson )

Or you can put it into your I-Pad notes or email to yourself on your I=Phone

I would have suggested entering the info into your 3com digital device but I cant recall the name of it now, obsolete as it has become because of the smart phones and other devices.

Wonderful. Steve Jobs studied calligraphy and many credit the beauty of the various Apple interfaces to his sense of calligraphic beauty. My father had beautiful handwriting, but I long ago gave up trying to read my own script and later printing.

We have entered into a Star Trek world, driven by Trekkie tech. Time to abandon the tyranny of obsolete technologies.

Just popped into my head...... Palm Pilot... was all the rage 10-12 years ago. Now dead, replaced by smart phones and tablet technology

PS in all this discussion I dont recall seeing criticism of Kindles, I=Pads, and smart phones replacing books, something I am sad to see, but I am a dinosaur....

Maybe this is why cursive is dead...

The typical adult has not scribbled anything by hand for six weeks
