ADULTS CAN'T TUNE OUT THEIR FAVE TEEN SONGS

By TATIANA DELIGIANNAKIS and LEONARD GREENE

December 27, 2006 -- Grownups may just love that new Beyoncé song - but chances are their favorite tune is something they heard as a teen.

According to a new study, the songs we like then become our all-time favorites because they're permanently ingrained in our sponge-like, young brains.

Psychologists call the tuneful phenomenon the "reminiscence bump."

Bronx music lover Jeff Mawer calls it something else - comfort food.

"I'm always looking for new things to listen to. But there are some bands that I always go back to," said Mawer, as he shopped for CDs at an Upper West Side Barnes & Noble. His guilty pleasure? "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.

University of Amsterdam researcher Steve Janssen asked 1,500 people with an average age of 36 to rate their favorite records. They overwhelmingly chose tunes they loved between age 16 and 21 - songs they often connect to specific events in their lives, Janssen said.

I find this conclusion to be bogus. Maybe that is because I am not at that 36 age. While there are songs that will bring back memories of times in my youth, my favorite songs are more related to events in my life. And most of my favorite songs are from my middle age.

Erk. Most of the songs I loved in my teens make me cringe now. The exception are Opera and show tunes.

For me, the late 70s and early to mid 80s were a great time for music. My favorite songs are from those times. Not saying it was the best music, but it was a fun time. This morning I heard a song I had not listened to in years, "No More Words". I remembered every word, but I hesitated to move my lips in the car as I was in traffic. It cracks me up how many singers we have in cars. Then again, if they want to laugh at me, I don't care. Making them smile may add joy to their day.

In my teens I was listening to:
Black Sabbath - no
Led Zeppelin - not really
Canned Heat - no
Cream - no
The Who - no, except for Tommy and maybe Quadraphenia
Jimi Hendrix - no, not really
Moody Blues - ok, I'll give you that one
Pink Floyd - not really
Yes - maybe
King Crimson - yes, but not the old stuff from my teens

Except for the Prog Rock, I gave up nearly all my teen music.
In fact I listened to some Sabbath and Hendrix a while back and basically couldn't listen for very long.

A former DFW station use to say, "If it's too loud, you are too old." I can listen to Sammy Hagar cranked up anytime.
